The objective of this project was to create a valid and effective Web-based self-screening instrument to provide older drivers with individualized information to help them make better decisions about driving. The project was intended to improve upon existing self-screening instruments by focusing on health concerns – that is, the symptoms people experience due to medical conditions, medications used to treat them, and the general aging process – rather than the medical conditions or medications themselves. This approach allows for a much more comprehensive self-screening than has been possible previously. By linking the severity of health concerns to their effects on critical driving skills, the instrument provides five types of individualized feedback including general awareness, self-awareness, and recommendations for behavioral changes, further evaluation, and vehicle modifications.
