Community Traffic Safety Outreach
Definition of a Safe Community
A Safe Community is a community that promotes injury prevention activities at the local level to solve local highway and traffic safety and other injury problems. It uses a "bottom up" approach involving its citizens in addressing key injury problems.
When a community takes ownership of their traffic safety problems, they are in the best position to make a difference by developing countermeasure to mitigate the priority traffic safety issues. Since the 1990s, NHTSA recognized the power of community participation in working with the State Highway Safety Office, injury prevention professionals, educational institutions, businesses, hospital and emergency medical systems, and other community stakeholders.
