Public Transportation

In 1998, mass transit carried more than 7.7 billion passengers who collectively traveled nearly 39.1 billion miles.
During 1998, 60,094 transit incidents resulted in 55,990 injuries and 286 fatalities.

Fifteen percent of all transit trips are for school. (American Public Transportation Association)

In 1998, there were approximately 8,000 injuries and 6 deaths associated with escalators in transit stations.

The National Transit Database is the reporting system of public mass transit financial and operational data. The data are collected from about 100 transit agencies nation-wide. The database does not provide personal information such as age or gender. The statistics presented, unless otherwise noted, come from the Safety Management Information Statistics Annual Report.
