October 4, 2000

Now that school is in session, more children are walking to and from neighborhood schools — many of them during the busiest time of the day. When many motorists are rushing to work or heading home after a tiring day at work. It is vital that the safety of our children be addressed by making walking safer in our community. In 1999, 5,220 pedestrians were killed. Nearly 20 percent of those were children.

Whereas, Hundreds of children could be saved each year if every community takes steps to make pedestrian safety a priority; and

Whereas, Parents and caregivers should teach children about pedestrian safety and become aware of the difficulties and dangers that children face on their trip to school each day; and

Whereas, Community leaders and parents should assess the “walkability” of their community by using the Walkability Checklist; and

Whereas, Each community should make a plan for immediate changes to increase the safety of children who are walking in our communities and a list of suggestions for improvements that can be done over time; and

Whereas, Children, parents and community leaders are joining together nationwide to walk to school and evaluate pedestrian safety in their community;

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved that I, (name, title of official) proclaim October 4, 2000, Walk Our Children to School Day in (name of city, state) and encourage everyone to consider the safety of pedestrians today and everyday.
