NHTSA has issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement to consider the potential environmental impacts of new fuel economy standards for model years 2017–2025 passenger cars and light trucks that NHTSA will be proposing pursuant to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The action will be part of a joint rulemaking with EPA, in which EPA plans to issue greenhouse gas standards for the same model year vehicles. This is the second phase of a National Program under which the two agencies establish harmonized requirements to improve the fuel economy and reduce the GHG emissions of new passenger cars and light trucks sold in the U.S.
