Biomechanics & Trauma
NHTSA's Biomechanics Research Plan, 2011-2015
The Human Injury Research and Applied Biomechanics Divisions of the Office of Vehicle Safety Research disseminate scientific information and conduct cooperative and collaborative research with other organizations around the world to develop tools that help mitigate injury and death in motor vehicle crashes. The Biomechanics Research Plan describes planned efforts for the 2011 – 2015 timeframe and includes rationale, project descriptions, deliverables, and schedule.
Biomechanics Software and Reports
These papers present the prevelance and consequence of lower extremity injuries in frontal crashes in the United States. Injury criteria, risk curves and recommended injury assessment reference values for below knee injuries are also provided for use with the Thor-Lx/HIIIr and Thor-FLx/HIIIr.
THOR Advanced Crash Test Dummy
(50th Percentile Adult Male, Alpha Version)
As a component of a long-term research program dedicated to the reduction of automotive crash trauma, the National Transportation Biomechanics Research Center of the NHTSA Research and Development Office has directed the development of an advanced crash test dummy, denoted as THOR.
- THOR Advanced Crash Test Dummy - 50th Percentile Adult Male, Alpha Version
Thor-FLx/ HIIIr Advanced Lower Extremity
(5th Percentile Adult Female Hybrid III Retrofit)
Following upon the development and implementation of the 50th percentile male Thor-Lx lower extremity, the NHTSA has directed the development of a companion design sized to fit the small 5% female Thor dummy, and which optionally can retrofit directly to the 5th percentile female Hybrid III at the distal femur interface.
Thor-Lx Finite Element Model
- Thor-Lx Left Leg Assembly (without flesh)
- Thor-Lx Right Leg Assembly (without flesh)
- Thor-Lx Left Leg Assembly (flesh included)
THOR-NT Advanced Crash Test Dummy
(50th Percentile Adult Male
Technical Data)Package (TDP) - Draft Version
As of July 2005, NHTSA has released a draft version of the TDP for the THOR-NT Advanced Crash Test Dummy (50th Percentile Adult Male) consisting of the downloadable components provided below.
- THOR-NT Advanced Crash Test Dummy - 50th Percentile Adult Male
Thor-Lx Advanced Lower Extremity (Thor-LX/HIIIr)
(50th Percentile Adult Male Hybrid III Retrofit)
As a component of the Thor advanced crash test dummy development program, the National Transportation Biomechanics Research Center (NTBRC) of the NHTSA Research and Development Office has directed the development of an advanced lower extremity design, denoted as Thor-Lx, which incorporates improved biofidelic features and significantly expanded instrumentation.
