Inova Regional Trauma Center (IRTC) at Inova Fairfax Hospital and the University of Virginia (UVA) Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB) have a long history of partnership in the CIREN program. This successful partnership, currently led by Jeff Crandall, PhD, has provided over 400 cases to the CIREN database, published and presented over 100 scientific papers, and has developed a program of community outreach and educational activities. Since its inception in 1989, the UVA CAB has been one of the premier research groups in the field of injury biomechanics. The CAB, which has just relocated to a 27,000 ft2 state-of-the-art laboratory with full vehicle crash test and rollover crash capabilities, is a world leader in biomechanical testing and has published over 800 journal and conference articles and has graduated over twenty PhD students who hold positions in government, health organizations and private industry worldwide. Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, is an 833-bed tertiary medical center and the flagship hospital within Inova Health System. It fosters a rich academic environment with residents and medical students rotating through the hospital departments every month. The hospital campus is also home to a branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School and School of Pharmacy. The hospital is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Northern Virginia and is located about 100 miles from UVA. The IRTC evaluates more than 4,000 trauma patients annually.
