Evaluation of the TNO Q3 Three-Year-Old Child Dummy
Although the TNO Q3 Three-Year-Old Child Dummy was designed for both frontal and lateral use, this evaluation was primarily limited to a study of its frontal repeatability, durability, and biofidelity. The Hybrid III Three-Year-Old Child Dummy was similarly evaluated. The methods used included both the certification tests for the Q3 and Hybrid III Three-Year-Old Child Dummy, out-of-position (OOP) airbag interaction tests, and a limited review of the biofidelity scaling.
The approach permitted an evaluation of the performance of the Q3 to its own requirements and to compare its repeatability, durability, and biofidelity to those of the Hybrid III Three-Year-Old dummy. In general the testing showed Q3 repeatability in calibration type was excellent, but only part of its frontal calibration and biofidelity requirements were met. It also showed some Q3 durability problems.
Some of the major findings summaries by dummy component are:
- The heads of the two dummies fell within the H-IIIC biofidelity corridor but the neck responses were not equivalent.
- The Q3 thorax was too stiff to meet either its calibration or biofidelty corridor, developed minor cracks in OOP tests, and contained no instrumentation for measuring chest deflection response in OOP testing.
- The spine also did not meet its calibration requirements.
Finally, it was concluded that the Q3 dummy required further work to optimize its performance and evaluation of the lateral response of the dummy should wait until the problems found in this and other independent testing have been addressed.
