Since vehicles interface with road surfaces through their tires, the crash avoidance safety capabilities and fuel efficiency of vehicles are directly influenced by tire performance properties. NHTSA’s tire research efforts have focused on evaluations of structural durability, resistance to age-related degradation, ability to stay on the rim during handling, and fuel efficiency performance (rolling resistance). The research has also included tire-wheel system related areas such as evaluations of technologies for monitoring tire pressure, icons for reporting low tire pressures to driver, and the effects of low tire pressure on vehicle stopping distance.
