2009 Early Estimates of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities
NHTSA has released the early estimates for 2009 motor vehicle traffic fatalities which show that an estimated 33,963 people died. This estimate, based on FastFARS, represents a decline of about 8.9 percent as compared to the 37,261 fatalities that occurred in 2008. Traffic fatalities have steadily declined since 2005. Early Estimate of Fatalities for January - September of 2009
A statistical projection of traffic fatalities for the first three quarters of 2009 shows that an estimated 25,576 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Motorcycle Helmet Use in 2009 -- Overall Results (NOPUS)
NCSA's Research Note provides information on the use of DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets in 2009 from the National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS). The DOT-compliant helmet use stood at 67 percent in 2009, a gain from 63 percent in 2008. In the past five years, motorcycle helmet use has been increasing slowly but steadily – increased from 48 percent in 2005 to 67 percent in 2009. Factors Related to Passenger Veh. Occupant Being Ejected
NCSA's Technical Report examined issues related to the ejection status of passenger vehicle occupants in fatal crashes using FARS data from 2003-2007. The relationship between ejection status and the following factors are included in the report: occupant restraint use, occupant injury severity, vehicle model year, speed limit at the location of the crash, rollover status, vehicle type, occupant age, occupant seat position, initial impact point, and a number of vehicles involved in the crash (single-vehicle crash versus multivehicle crash). Lives Saved Calculations for Seat Belts & Frontal Air Bags
This 56-page technical report explains how NHTSA produces the lives saved estimates for seat belts and frontal air bags. The methodology is described in detail, including the use of effectiveness ratings for seat belts and frontal air bags. The interactions of the effectiveness of seat belts and the effectiveness of frontal air bags are discussed in this report. The effectiveness of side air bags, child safety seats, motorcycle helmets, and other safety devices are discussed in other NHTSA reports, and are not quantified within this report. Fatalities & Fatality Rates in Alcohol-Impaired-Driving Crashes by State
In 2008 the alcohol-impaired driving fatality rate declined from 0.43 to 0.40 fatalities per 100 million VMT. From 2007 to 2008, the alcohol-impaired driving fatality rate declined in 40 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and remained the same or increased in the remaining 10 States. Geospatial Analysis of Rural Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities
In recent years, on average about 44 percent of traffic fatalities occurred in urban areas. NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) codes the functional classification of land use by a binary indicator, i.e., if the location is a rural or urban area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau. The 2008 Traffic Safety Facts FARS/GES Annual Report (Early Edition) is now available and provides the most current 2008 data and final 2007 data. The “Early Edition” does not contain exposure data (i.e., vehicle miles traveled, registered vehicles, licensed drivers) and other data points that customarily are not available until later. Factors Related to Fatal Single-Vehicle Run-Off-Road Crashes (NCSA Tech. Report)
Run-Off-Road crashes cause a large proportion of fatalities and serious injuries to the vehicle occupants. In this study, fatal crashes from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System for passenger vehicles (passenger cars and LTVs) during the period 1991 to 2007 were used to identify the roadway- (e.g., rural/urban nature and curve existence), driver- (e.g., age, gender, drowsy, and alcohol use), environmental- (e.g., weather, lighting condition), and vehicle-related factors (e.g., speeding) associated with the fatal single-vehicle run-off-road crashes. In 2007, NHTSA focused on information in the Not-in-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS) regarding children 14 and younger.
