Following are reference resources available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that may be useful to your Community Partner Team in planning your community traffic safety project. They are organized by sector for your convenience, and a general category is included at the end for those resources that cut across all sector categories.

The items listed—as well as many other materials—are available from NHTSA’s web site at www.nhtsa.dot.gov. All materials are free of charge but quantities are limited.

The resources listed were current as of the date of publication. NHTSA develops new publications, materials and resources on a ongoing basis. Resources are listed by title and NHTSA product number and include a brief description of the resource. Some resources also are available in Spanish. Air Bags

Air Bags and On-Off Switches-Information for an Informed Decision

This brochure provides information for use by consumers in making the decision to have an on-off switch installed for the air bags in their vehicle. Although, the vast majority of people riding in vehicles do not need an on-off switch, a limited number may benefit from having an opportunity to turn off their air bags when necessary. This risk group includes: people who must transport babies and children ages 12 and under in the front seat; those who cannot change their driving position to sit ten inches from the steering wheel; and those with certain medical conditions. Legislative History of Recent Primary Safety Belt Laws

This report documents a study conducted by NHTSA to identify strategies that supported or opposed new legislative provisions and the barriers encountered in modifying existing safety belt laws. These types of fatalities occur most often in rural areas of the nation. A study was conducted using focus groups with young rural mothers, ages 13-29, who have children under the age of four. Program Strategies for Increasing Safety Belt Usage in Rural Areas

Based on focus groups involving two groups of rural males from Kentucky and Texas, 16-29 years old and 20-26 years old, who acknowledged they did not consistently use their safety belts when driving pickup trucks. This fact sheet addresses the need for states to strengthen existing child passenger safety laws to close serious gaps and exemptions in coverage which diminish the protection that all children need in motor vehicles. Suggestions for closing gaps between seat belt laws and child safety laws are indicated, along with ways to upgrade existing child safety laws to eliminate exemptions.
