IV. If No Occupant Protection Is Available

  1. Finally, we need to talk about what to do if there are no seat belts to use to install child safety seat or no built-in child safety seats on the bus
  2. This is one of the areas where there are no easy answers
  3. This situation will probably arrive unexpectedly
    1. If someone had contacted the pupil transportation office about transporting a young child, the supervisor hopefully would have made the necessary arrangements
      1. For example, provided a school bus with an installed child safety seat
  4. But what happens if you arrive at a stop and there is a young child with or without a seat who needs to get on the bus?
  5. In terms of safety and liability, you should not transport a preschool child without a child safety seat
  6. And you shouldn’t take a child in a child safety seat without a way to install the child safety seat on the bus
  7. Call the supervisor for directions or arrange for another bus with a child safety seat to transport the child
  8. Let’s talk about how we would handle this situation

    (Discuss local policies and procedures.)
