2008 Cinco de Mayo
Spanish Media Mini-Planner

This Spanish media planner provides communications tools and marketing materials to underscore the importance of not driving after drinking alcohol. It includes earned media materials and posters that seek to change the behaviors of Spanish-dominant Hispanics, a segment that has been slow to embrace the dangers of impaired driving. The materials can be customized depending on the needs of your programs.

Cinco de Mayo has become a big night out for many, particularly young adults. But it is also a very dangerous night out because of alcohol or drug impaired drivers. Those celebrating this year should be sure and designate their sober driver in advance – before the festivities begin.

From 1999 to 2005, an average of 43 percent of all highway fatalities each year on May 5 and overnight into the early morning on May 6 were caused by impaired drivers with blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of 0.08 percent and above, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This planner provides you with marketing material and earned media tools to fit your local needs.

You will find information and messaging to support your impaired driving efforts among Hispanics during the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Marketing material includes posters and a sticker that designated drivers can wear. One poster has a blank space in the middle so bars and restaurants can adapt it to promote their Cinco de Mayo programs for that night. Another poster refers to the well known position among Hispanics to find out if a driver is sober (Make the number 4 with your legs and don’t fall down). Slogan will be: Amigos no dejan que los amigos manejen borrachos (Friends don’t let friends drive drunk).

Please choose, adapt, and distribute the materials in a way that best fits your local needs and goals.
