2009 Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities for the First Quarter

NCSA Report to Congress "Fatalities & Injuries in Motor Vehicle Backing Crashes"
The U.S. Congress required the Secretary of Transportation to examine and report on fatalities and injuries in backing crashes. In this report, NHTSA estimates that 463 fatalities and 48,000 injuries a year occur in backing crashes with about two-thirds of the fatalities and injuries captured by the recently released Not-in-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS) system. Not-In-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS) 2007 -- Fatalities & Injuries to Children
In 2007, NHTSA focused on information in the Not-in-Traffic Surveillance (NiTS) regarding children 14 and younger. Child Restraint Use in 2008 -- Overall Results (NOPUS)

In 2008, seat belt use in the United States ranged from 55.7 percent in American Samoa to 97.2 percent in Michigan. These results are from probability-based observational surveys conducted by 50 States, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories in accordance with criteria established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to ensure reliable results.
