SUMMARY

02/15/24

Uploaded the 64bit version of the 1997 PCSAS files.

08/24/18

Updated the 2008 Expanded SAS for datasets AIRBAG, BAGSEAT, and SEATLOC to include RATWGT values for rows which had blank values.

12/13/17

Updated the 1979 SAS files.  Originally in an SSD format, now in SAS7BDAT which should be readable by current version of SAS.  Original files saved in a subfolder.

08/30/17

Uploaded the SAS datasets for the Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems – Special Study (TPMS-SS).

07/06/17

Uploaded the 2015 NASS CDR files to the EDR_Reports folder.  This folder contains 1045 CDRx files imaged from the 2015 NASS cases, along with 13 PDF files of CDRx reports obtained 3rd party sources.  ALL files have been redacted to remove PII.

03/03/17

Issue found with the truncation of SCASEID for the NMVCCSCASES dataset.  Fixed.

03/02/17

Uploaded a dataset to the NMVCCS folder for use in translating SCASEID to individual Sample Year, PSU, and CaseNumber.  Dataset named “nmvccscases”.

01/12/17

Uploaded the SEATLOC and SEATLOCFMT SAS datasets to the “NASS\2015\Expanded SAS” folder

10/31/16

Uploaded the 2015 NASS SAS files to include the extended SAS files for Air Bags, Tires & Tire Damage, and Child Seat data.

06/30/16

Uploaded the 2014 NASS CDR files in the EDR_Reports folder.  Unlike previous years, this year NASS is publishing the actual sanitized CDR file.  All personal identifiers have been removed from the files.  To view the files, users will need to download and install the free Bosch CDR viewer at the following site:

http://www.boschdiagnostics.com/cdr/software-downloads

02/17/16

Added the SAS datasets for the NMVCCS interviews under the NMVCCS folder.  Please note that this data comes directly from occupant interviews and may not be consistent with other case coding.  Additionally, it has not gone through the rigorous quality control as other datasets due to the nature of the data.

11/02/15

Reposted the 2014 extended BAGSEAT dataset.  The original posted dataset contained data from the wrong year.

09/02/15

Uploaded the 2014 NASS CDS datasets.  This includes expanded datasets (formatted and unformatted) for Tires, Air Bags, Seats and Child Seats.

04/01/15

Uploaded the 2013 NASS CDS EDR Reports (1235 reports) in PDF format into the EDR folder.  Most of the CDR files were read using the latest version of the CDR software to take advantage of enhancements to the CDR software, so this data may not 100% match information found on the XML case viewer.  Ten reports were obtained via third parties so are only in a basic PDF scanned format.

10/29/14

The Extended SAS files for the NASS CDS tire data (TIRE & TIREDMG datasets) for data years 2002 – 2010 have been posted to the specific years’ folders (2002 & 2003 have been updated to correct translation issues).

09/30/14

An issue was found with the coding for SEATLOC.POSGUIDE in the extended datasets.  The wrong value (2/No) was being stamped into the file (correct value = 0/Not Applicable).  This issue affects the 2012 & 2013 files which have been reposted.  Do not use SEATLOC files with file dates before 09/30/14.

09/17/14

An issue was found with the codes for OA.POSPRES, and SEATLOC.IPOSPRES (Extended SAS file) as shown in the NASS CDS Coding & Editing manual.  This affects the values for the attributes “Belt extender” and “Shoulder belt fit adjuster”.  The correct codes should be 17 for “Shoulder belt fit adjuster,” and 18 for “Belt extender.”  This correction will be made in the 2014 NASS CDS Coding & Editing manual.  NOTE:  The values found for this field in the Analytical User’s Manual are correctly assigned.

08/28/14

Uploaded the 2013 NASS CDS SAS data into the 2013 folder.  This includes extended file datasets for the following data:  Air Bags (AIRBAG & BAGSEAT), Seats (SEATLOC), Child Seats (CHILDSEAT), and Tires (TIRE & TIREDMG); as well as a dataset (CASE2013) to map cases between the SAS data and the “CASEID” used on the internet case viewer.  Manuals will be posted to the NHTSA once approved.

03/14/13

Uploaded the 2012 NASS CDS EDR Reports (1157 reports) in PDF format into the EDR folder.  The CDR files were read using the latest version of the CDR software to take advantage of enhancements to the CDR software, so this data may not 100% match information found on the XML case viewer.

11/15/13

The file for the 2012 CDS Unformatted data has been corrected and reposted to the 2012 “Unformatted Data” folder.

11/14/13

A problem was discovered with the executable file for the 2012 CDS Unformatted data.  The file has been pulled and will be replaced as soon as issues are addressed.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

09/09/13

Uploaded the 2011 and 2012 CDS SAS Extended files (formatted & unformatted) for the following files:  AIRBAG, BAGSEAT, SEATLOC, CHILDSEAT, TIRE & TIREDMG.  A format catalog is also included, as well as the file which creates the catalog.  The files may be found in their respective year folder under the Extended Files subfolder.

08/30/13

Uploaded the 2012 NASS CDS SAS data into the 2012 folder.  Manuals will be posted once approved.

04/01/13

Uploaded updated versions of the 2009 – 2011 NASS CDS EDR Reports in PDF format into the EDR folder.  The CDR files were read using the latest version of the CDR software to take advantage of enhancements to the CDR software.

01/22/13

Uploaded the 2010 and 2011 NASS CDS EDR Reports in PDF format in the EDR folder.  These reports have been sanitized by removing the production number of the VIN along with other personally identifiable information.

12/19/12

Reposted the 2011 PCSAS files. An issue was discovered by users on 32 bit machines using the PCSAS files which were created on a 64 bit machine. While the problem didn't affect results, it did produce warnings in the SAS log. New files were posted which were built on a 32 bit machine and shouldn't produce the mentioned warnings. Again, users should otherwise not notice any other differences in the data.

11/20/12

Uploaded the 2011 CASE2011 SAS dataset into the 2011 folder.  This dataset allows the user to determine the SCASEID for use on the NASS CDS XML Case Viewer website.

08/30/12

Uploaded the 2011 NASS CDS SAS data into the 2011 folder.

12/09/11

Uploaded the 2010 Expanded CDS SAS files for the following datasets:  AIRBAG, BAGSEAT, CHILDSEAT and SEATLOC.

12/06/11

An issue was noted with the 2008 datasets in that 7 cases were found to have incorrect weight (RATWGT) assignements (0 instead of actual value).  The PC SAS and Transport files have been reposted correcting this problem.  Additional ERRATA note:  In further reviewing the 1997 – 2010 SAS files, 2 cases from the 2000 data year were found to have incorrect weight assignments (0 instead of actual value): PSU = 45, CASENO = 180, actual RATWGT = 13464.55; and PSU = 45, CASENO = 188, actual RATWGT = 87.41.

11/30/11

Added CASE1997 thru CASE2003 SAS datasets to allow users using the CDS 1997 thru 2003 SAS datasets a link to the expanded SAS CDS datasets, and to individual cases in the on-line case viewers.

09/22/11

Uploaded the 2010 NASS CDS data into the 2010 folder.

08/09/11

Uploaded the 2009 NASS CDS EDR Reports in PDF format in the EDR_Reports folder. A total of 630 reports are included.  These reports have been sanitized by removing the production number of the VIN, hexadecimal data, and any other possibly identifying data.

05/27/11

Uploaded CASE2004 - CASE2009 SAS datasets to enable users using the CDS 2004 - CDS 2009 expanded SAS datasets to link EDR reports to their respective cases.  The datasets may also be used to link the older version SAS CDS datasets to the expanded SAS CDS datasets.

03/30/11

Uploaded the NMVCCS SAS formats program used to create the formats library.

01/11/11

Uploaded the CHILDSEAT datasets for the Extended CDS SAS file (1997-2009).  These files contain data for all documented child seats found during CDS research and may or may not have been occupied at the time of the crash.  The analyst should refer to the OCCNO field to determine whether the seat was occupied.  Please note that these datasets have not received the rigorous QC as our normal files and may contain errors.  Users are requested to contact  NCSAweb@dot.gov if any problems are found.  Format files are not yet available for this dataset, however the user may refer to the CDS Coding & Editing Manual for further information regarding code definition.

Additionally, updated extended CDS datasets for SEATLOC for years 2007-2009 were also uploaded.  Three fields:  LATANCH, LATTETH & ACTHIST were removed.  All 3 fields were showing unknown data for all records.  LATANCH & LATTETH were moved to the CHILDSEAT dataset in 2007, while the ACTHIST variable was retired after data year 2006.

12/20/10

An error was identified in the GV dataset, SURCOND field.  The code for “Other” was incorrectly truncated during data translation.  The issue only affected 7 vehicles in the 2009 data file (listed below).

Uploaded adjusted SEATLOC datasets for the Extended CDS SAS file.  Found that the field “ACTBLRET” was incorrectly titled “ACTLBLRET”.  This  has been corrected as well as removing ACTLPLAT & ACTBLRET from the 2007-2009 files since data collection for these two fields were moved to the child seat dataset.

09/21/10

Uploaded the SEATLOC datasets for the Extended CDS SAS file (2003-2009 years only).  These files contain data for all seats of occupied seats as well as seats inspected during field vehicle inspections (occupied or not).  Please note that this data has NOT received extensive testing and may contain errors.  Any problems/questions can be forwarded to the NCSA webmaster at NCSA.WebMaster@dot.gov.

09/21/10

Uploaded the 2009 NASS CDS SAS files, including the extended SAS datasets for AIRBAG and BAGSEAT.  NOTE:  Users are requested to fully review the Analytical Users’ Manual as there were coding changes to the data regarding the coding of vehicles and their occupants when the vehicle > 10 years old (< model year 2000).

08/26/10

Uploaded the 2008 NASS CDS EDR Reports in PDF format in the EDR folder.  These reports have been sanitized by removing the production number of the VIN and all hexadecimal data.

06/21/10

Uploaded the AIRBAG and BAGSEAT datasets for 2000 thru 2008. Files were added to individual year file folders as well as in a zip file in the top level for easy downloading. Please note that these files have NOT received extensive testing and may contain errors. Any problems noted can be forwarded to the NCSA webmaster at: NCSA.WebMaster@dot.gov

04/30/10

Made slight adjustment to the 2008 TIRE dataset to change the MAKE field to a code instead of the text value.

04/29/10

Extended SAS datasets for 2008 TIRE and TIREDMG were added and can be found in the 2008/PCSAS folder.

09/24/09

An issue was identified with the proper assignment of values in the 2008 NASS-CDS format file for the variable OA.FETALDOA. The issue was corrected and the file reposted.

04/15/09

Uploaded the NASS CDS 2007 EDR reports zip file to the EDR Reports folder.

09/10/08

Due to issue discovered with the CDS 2007 Format file, new files were posted to the ASCII folder and the SASFormats folder for CDS 2007.

08/28/08

Updated the 2007 CDS files with regular zip files due to user issues with the extracting executables.

08/27/08

Corrected problem with the 2007 CDS transport files (incorrectly loaded the 2006 file).  Corrected issue with the self-extracting executables for 2007 CDS.

08/26/08

Added the 2007 CDS files.

08/04/08

Added the 1979 thru 1987 NASS SAS Files.  These data years are pre-NASS CDS/GES.  Please refer to the below website for documentation of these files:   http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/cats/listpublications.aspx?Id=l&ShowBy=DocType

07/23/08

Added CASE2002 & CASE2003 SAS datasets to enable users using the CDS 2002 & 2003 expanded SAS datasets to link EDR reports to their respective cases.  The datasets may also be used to link the older version SAS CDS datasets to the expanded SAS CDS datasets.

The table below lists the changes made in the Spring of 2000 to the previously completed NASS 1997 and 1998 SAS files. The changes were made due to the addition of two new variables, PDOF1 (Principal Direction of Force in Degrees-Highest Delta V) PDOF2 (Principal Direction of Force in Degrees-Second Highest Delta V). In both variables, the PDOF in Degrees is rounded to the nearest 10 degrees.

Types of changes to the files:

  1. The External Vehicle data sets (Ve.sd2) were corrected in 127 impacts, due to the presence of negative clock directions, blank clock directions, blank CDC rankings and incorrect rounding of PDOFs.
  2. We received new coding from PC VINA and were able to code the model year for the derived variable "vinmodyr" on the General Vehicle data sets (Gv.sd2) for 711 model year 1960-1980 vehicles.
  3. We removed one "dropped" case from the 1997 file.
