Susan Gorcowski serves as the associate administrator for Communications and Consumer Information (OCCI) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Gorcowski manages the office responsible for providing accurate and timely vehicle and traffic safety information to the news media, consumers, and partner organizations. Working closely with the program office, OCCI conducts market research, develops external communication strategies, implements paid and earned advertising campaigns, develops collateral program material in support of traffic and vehicle safety initiatives, and manages the Agency’s websites.
Gorcowski has more than 34 years of highway safety experience at the State, regional, and national levels. She began her career in a State highway safety office in Oklahoma before moving to Regional program management positions in Denver and Chicago. She left Chicago to work in the Federal Highway Administration safety office in Washington, DC, before returning to NHTSA 20 years ago. Since that time, Gorcowski has held leadership positions in the behavioral program office and in the communications office. She has received numerous Secretary’s Awards and the Senior Executive Service Meritorious Presidential Rank Award. Prior to coming to the highway safety field, Gorcowski worked at St. Louis University.
Gorcowski has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Regis College and a master’s degree in urban affairs from St. Louis University.
