Ryan Posten, NHTSA’s Associate Administrator for Rulemaking, leads the development and delivery of NHTSA’s rulemakings and policy. His office is responsible for setting the nation’s vehicle safety standards, fuel economy regulations, anti-theft and consumer information regulations, and international harmonization and policy. His team also handles the operation and development of NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings.
Posten has been part of the U.S. Department of Transportation for about three decades, serving in various roles to advance transportation safety across the nation. Prior to joining NHTSA, Posten spent 23 years at the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. He held various roles of escalating responsibilities, including positions as an enforcement investigator, rulemaking specialist, manager of the special permits division, and director of enforcement to the executive lead of policy and programs for hazardous materials safety.
