Dear Mr. Graham: This is in response to your letter of August 14, 1972, requesting a interpretation of Standard 217, Bus Window Retention and Release.; With respect to the rear emergency exit, you state that the top of th rear seat extends above the bottom of the rear window and that there is adequate clearance between the top of the seat and the top of the window to meet the requirements of S5.4', and you inquire whether this configuration satisfies the requirements of the standard. Assuming that the seat back does not obstruct the exit opening required by S5.4, from the information provided, it appears that the rear emergency exit you describe meets the requirements of Standard 217.; Sincerely, Richard B.
