Dear Mr. Yeoman: This is in reply to your letter of August 9, 1972, concerning th application of Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 302, 'Flammability of Interior Materials'.; You ask whether mattress stuffing must meet the requirements of th Standard. Paragraph S4.1 of the Standard lists mattress covers only. This does not include the mattress stuffing.; You also ask whether the stuffing in a 'dual purpose passenger seat must meet the requirements of the Standard. Paragraph S4.1 includes 'seat cushions' and 'seat backs'. Since the Standard does apply to the filling material in seat cushions and seat backs, the stuffing in a 'dual purpose passenger seat' must also meet the requirements of the Standard even though it may be converted into a bed.; Yours truly, Richard B.
