Trump’s Transportation Department to Invest $20 Million to Help Law Enforcement Tackle Dangerous Driving

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced a $20 million investment to deploy cutting-edge traffic safety enforcement innovations. These tools target dangerous driving behaviors to make roads safer for American families. 

Local law enforcement can use these dollars for: 

• State-of-the-art safety tech to curb dangerous driving behaviors
• Predictive data-driven analytics to deploy law enforcement resources
• Public-private partnerships designed to incentivize positive driving behavior
• Specialized training to educate law enforcement on dangerous driving behaviors

“The Trump Administration strongly supports the men and women of law enforcement and we know that to reduce traffic fatalities significantly, we must equip agencies with modern, scalable tools,” said NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison. “This new funding allows us to test and validate next-generation enforcement models that will become the proven safety countermeasures of tomorrow—using data-driven technology to stop risky driving behaviors before they lead to tragedy on our roadways.”

NHTSA’s Innovative Traffic Safety Enforcement (ITSE) program supports local law enforcement agencies by funding projects that develop, test, and validate innovations that combat dangerous driving behaviors–including drug- and alcohol-impaired driving, distracted driving, seatbelt use, speeding, and reckless driving. Applicants are encouraged to incorporate evidence-based strategies–such as high-visibility enforcement and publicized checkpoints–into these initiatives.
