Pedestrian Safety

Making a Community Safer for Pedestrians

NHTSA's mission is to save lives and prevent injuries due to traffic crashes — and that includes reducing pedestrian deaths. In 2018, 6,283 pedestrians died, a more than 3% increase from 2018 and the most pedestrian deaths since 1990. We encourage communities to develop local plans and programs to keep pedestrians safe. Here is one example of state, county and local officials working together to develop a protected intersection.
