NHTSA Announces Anti-Speeding Campaign Ahead of Holiday Weekend
New data details deadly risk of speeding
July 2, 2025 | Washington, DC
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reminding all drivers to slow down as millions prepare to travel over the Independence Day holiday weekend. Nearly one-third of all traffic deaths each year are speeding-related. NHTSA will launch its Speeding Catches Up With You prevention campaign on Monday, July 7, to address the risks posed by excessive speed.
Speeding remains a consistent problem on America’s roads, with new data showing that 11,775 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2023, and an estimated 332,598 people injured. The campaign, which runs through the end of the month, will feature a new TV ad educating drivers about the deadly consequences of speeding. Law enforcement agencies nationwide will also conduct high-visibility enforcement to stop speeders and prevent deadly crashes.
“Speeding puts everyone at risk, and the consequences can be deadly,” NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said. “NHTSA’s latest campaign aims to educate the public about the dangers of speeding, promote strong traffic safety laws, and support law enforcement on our nation’s roads.”
