From 2009. This document extends for six months a requirement that trailers with antilock brake systems be equipped with an external antilock malfunction indicator lamp. This requirement, which is included in the Federal motor vehicle safety standard that governs vehicles equipped with air brakes, is currently scheduled to sunset on March 1, 2009.

From 2009. On July 27, 2009, NHTSA published a final rule that amended the Federal motor vehicle safety standard for air brake systems by requiring substantial improvements in stopping distance performance. In response, the agency received eight petitions for reconsideration. This document responds to those petitions by correcting errors in a table published in the final rule, removing a testing specification, and adjusting the compliance date for a small number of vehicles the agency had not fully accounted for in the final rule. This document provides a partial response to the submitted petitions for reconsideration.

This study makes use of the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS). NADS is a full immersion driving simulator used to study driver behavior as well as driver-vehicle reactions and responses. The vehicle dynamics model of the existing heavy truck on NADS has been modified with the creation of two additional brake models. The three braking systems used in this study are the standard S-cam, the enhanced S-cam (larger drums and shoes), and the air-actuated disc brake system

From 2012, This appendix summarizes the application of air quality modeling tools to assess impacts to air quality and the related health effects of NHTSA’s proposed CAFE standards. The air quality modeling and health effects analysis focused on ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). No air quality modeling of toxic emissions was done as part of this analysis.
